Ryan Stoneberger. Artist Statement
My work is a time capsule of moments that cannot be relived. Each piece is connected to a special memory from my past. These memories are portrayed through landscapes that the moment took place in. Similarly, to how a smell can recall a distant memory, the landscapes that I create hold a similar function with recalling memories. Each work has a story behind it, which gives me the opportunity to reminisce when creating and observing my work. I find it crucial to document these moments because after my dad passed away on August 29, 2009 due to cancer I wanted to document the time I have shared with him, friends, and family in pictorial form so that I will not forget.
The landscapes I portray in my work consist of mountain ranges, campgrounds, farms, and other outdoor areas that I have traveled to. I use line work, attention to detail, and the use of patterns to set my work apart. Printmaking works for me because of its ability to be reproduced and altered. This allows me to change or add colors to the same image. By reproducing, adding color, and detail I can reconstruct these images that bring me back to those fond memories.
